Borzoi: How should an owner build alone time and a stable routine?
For Borzoi, build alone time from the dog's settled starting point instead of choosing a fixed number of hours. Schedule the first attempt after the dog's normal age-appropriate outlet, not at peak excitement. Build separation in tiny increments with a camera or written log, and arrange company or a sitter before the dog crosses its threshold. Increase absence only after the dog has returned to its normal resting behaviour at the previous step.
What the routine needs to account for
Borzoi's exercise is recorded as Even though Borzoi are large, they are graceful, athletic animals who make good housedogs. Here, that matters because it changes the amount and timing of movement, stimulation, and recovery this situation needs.
Build alone time in small steps
- Build separation in tiny increments with a camera or written log, and arrange company or a sitter before the dog crosses its threshold.
- Use this exercise note (Even though Borzoi are large, they are graceful, athletic animals who make good housedogs) to choose the starting amount of movement and the length of the recovery period.
- Increase absence only after the dog has returned to its normal resting behaviour at the previous step.
Do not push through
Do not continue exposure if distress escalates, the dog cannot take food, or recovery takes longer after each repetition.

About once a year the Borzoi will shed more heavily for several weeks, and during this shedding season more frequent grooming is needed. Regular baths keep the…

Exercise: Even though Borzoi are large, they are graceful, athletic animals who make good housedogs. They do need daily exercise, whether in the form of long walks or running in a securely fenced yard. Being sighthounds, they are apt to chase anything that moves, so they should always be in an enclosed area or on a leash. It is never advisable to allow a Borzoi to…

Training: Early socialization and puppy training classes are recommended. Exposing the puppy to positive experiences with a wide variety of people, places, and situations will help him develop into a well-adjusted adult. Borzoi are intelligent and very affectionate with their owners, but are also independent and sometimes stubborn, so training may be a challenge.…
