Whippet · Two puppies
Should You Bring Home Two Whippet Puppies From the Same Litter?
Usually, bringing home one Whippet puppy at a time is the more manageable plan. Two same-age puppies can become more interested in each other than in their people and require separate training, walks, socialisation, sleep, handling, and daily attention. ‘Littermate syndrome’ is a behavioural label, not a medical diagnosis, and it does not happen to every pair; the practical question is whether your household can run two individual puppy programmes every day, including when one puppy is resting and the other is being trained.
What changes when there are two?
What must happen separately every day?
- At least some training with each puppy out of sight of the sibling.
- Separate walks or carried socialisation appropriate to veterinary guidance.
- Individual handling of paws, ears, mouth, collar, harness, and restraint.
- Separate feeding and quiet rest.
- One-to-one play and calm time with each human household member.
- Short separations so each puppy can function without the other present.
What should be prepared before collection?
- Set up two secure rest areas rather than one shared crate.
- Plan who handles each puppy during meals, toilet trips, training, and nighttime care.
- Choose gates, pens, and doors that allow complete separation when needed.
- Budget two veterinary, food, equipment, and training workloads.
- Arrange separate socialisation opportunities with known safe people and dogs.
- Define the plan if the puppies become distressed, compete, or cannot be managed safely together.
Which signs show overdependence or conflict?
When is one puppy the better decision?
Choose one if the household cannot provide separate daily programmes, if work or childcare already makes one puppy difficult, or if safe separation cannot be maintained. Waiting until the first dog is mature, trained, and strongly bonded with the household is commonly recommended by trainers and breeders cited by AKC; it is a planning recommendation, not a universal rule.
