Borzoi: Training and behaviour

Training a Borzoi works best when the goal is made easy to understand, rewarding to repeat, and safe to get wrong. Keep Borzoi close to a calm handler and use reward-based cues during the first repetitions. Change one variable at a time and record what helps this individual dog succeed. Practise the same cue in one slightly harder setting only after the easy version is reliable.

What this breed clue changes in training

Borzoi's training is recorded as Early socialization and puppy training classes are recommended. Here, that matters because it changes how much reinforcement, repetition, and choice the dog may need to stay engaged.

A better way to practise

  1. Change one variable at a time and record what helps this individual dog succeed.
  2. Let the training note (Early socialization and puppy training classes are recommended) set the reinforcement, session length, and distance from distractions.
  3. Practise the same cue in one slightly harder setting only after the easy version is reliable.

Escalate when

Escalate when behaviour changes suddenly or safety cannot be maintained.

Exercise: Even though Borzoi are large, they are graceful, athletic animals who make good housedogs. They do need daily exercise, whether in the form of long walks or running in a securely fenced yard. Being sighthounds, they are apt to chase anything that moves, so they should always be in an enclosed area or on a leash. It is never advisable to allow a Borzoi to…

Training: Early socialization and puppy training classes are recommended.
