How Should You Change a Golden Retriever’s Food?

Direct answer

For most healthy dogs, AKC guidance recommends changing food gradually over 5–7 days: about 25% new food at the start, 50% around the middle, 75% near the end, then 100% new food if the dog is tolerating it. Sensitive dogs may need longer. Measure portions and monitor stool, vomiting, appetite, itching, body condition, and weight.

What is the standard transition ratio?

This is a general starting schedule from AKC guidance, not a deadline. Dogs with sensitive stomachs, food allergies, or gastrointestinal disease may need a longer veterinary plan.

Day 125% new + 75% old
Day 350% new + 50% old
Day 575% new + 25% old
Day 7100% new, only if tolerated

What should you measure each day?

  • Grams or cups of old food and new food separately.
  • Stool consistency and frequency.
  • Vomiting, nausea, gas, appetite, or refusal.
  • Itching, redness, rash, or hair loss.
  • Treats, chews, toppers, and supplements added to the daily intake.

When should you slow down or stop?

Mild loose stool, dog otherwise wellReturn to the last tolerated ratio and progress more slowly.
Repeated vomiting, persistent diarrhoea, or appetite lossStop the transition and contact a veterinarian.
Facial swelling, breathing difficulty, collapseSeek emergency veterinary care.
Prescription or elimination dietFollow the veterinarian’s instructions rather than this general schedule.

How do you decide the final amount?

The package guide is a starting point. Adjust using the dog’s age, activity, body-condition score, weight trend, treats, and veterinary advice. A breed-standard weight is not an individual feeding target.
