When Should a Golden Retriever’s Nose Pigment Change Be Checked?

A change in nose pigment is an individual health question, not something a breed page can diagnose. Photograph the change, note when it began, and contact a veterinarian if it persists or comes with crusting, pain, discharge, or other signs.
What should you record before the appointment?
- Dated photographs in similar lighting.
- Whether the surface texture remains normally cobbled or becomes smooth.
- Crusting, scaling, ulceration, bleeding, discharge, or pain.
- Changes around the lips, eyes, ears, or elsewhere on the skin.
- Recent sun exposure, products, medication, appetite, and energy changes.
Which signs change the urgency?

Why can a photograph not identify the cause?
Loss of pigment can appear with different skin conditions. VCA describes depigmentation together with crusting, erosions, ulcers, and texture change in discoid lupus, but those signs are not a diagnosis by themselves. Examination and, when indicated, testing determine the cause.
