How Should a Harness Fit a Golden Retriever?
Direct answer
Choose a harness that leaves the shoulders free and does not press on the throat. Measure the dog’s girth at the deepest part of the ribcage, then check the fit again while the dog walks.
Which measurements do you need?
Neck baseMeasure where the neck meets the shoulders.
Chest girthMeasure the widest ribcage area, usually just behind the front legs.
Product chartUse the manufacturer’s chart; weight alone is not enough.
How should the fitted harness be checked?
- You can place two fingers under the straps without a loose gap.
- The neck opening sits toward the top of the sternum rather than the throat.
- The girth strap does not rub the elbows or sit behind the rib cage.
- The dog can extend and move the shoulders freely.
- The dog cannot reverse out of the harness.
What should you check while walking?
Shortened front strideCheck for shoulder restriction.
Hair loss or rednessStop use and reassess fit and material.
